CCC calls on all sectors to ‘climate-proof PH’s water systems’

In celebration of the World Water Day, the Climate Change Commission (CCC) on Sunday called on all sectors to unite and mainstream climate change adaptation strategies for the country’s water systems.

Citing the United Nations-led Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), CCC Secretary Emmanuel De Guzman said climate change was exacerbating water shortages from increasing and competing demand and deteriorating water supplies, both in terms of quality and quantity.

In a series of special reports, the IPCC highlighted that climate emergency places water resources under an unprecedented threat.

De Guzman pointed out that, just in 2019, more than six million Filipinos were affected by water shortages in Metro Manila, which resulted in the disruption of social and economic activities in the metropolis.

“This is what the future holds should we fail to deliver adaptation interventions that will ensure water security amid the changing climate,” De Guzman said.

CCC is calling for more efficient and united pathways for “climate-proofing” the country’s water systems.

“Let us review our current water governance structure, fast-track reforms for the sustainable use and management of our water resources, and ensure access to water and sanitation for all Filipinos,” De Guzman said.

World Water Day, which is celebrated March 22 every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water.

This year’s theme, “Water and Climate Change,” explores how water and climate change are inextricably linked.
