DAVAO CITY – Authorities here will be intensifying security measures for the 83rd Araw ng Davao celebration even after Mayor Sara Z. Duterte ordered the cancellation of some of the major activities due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) scare.
Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC) head Angel Sumagaysay said on Wednesday’s AFP-PNP Press Corps Southern Mindanao briefing, the city will still be implementing tight security for its cityhood anniversary.
Sumagaysay said around 3,000 personnel coming from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), Task Force Davao (TF Davao), Civil Security Unit (CSU) and other agencies will secure the city from March 1 up to 16.
He said the local government was still expecting many people to converge in the city for the remaining four activities for Araw ng Davao out of the original 23.
Sumagaysay said he was encouraging the public to participate in the remaining activities to enjoy the cityhood of Davao, but reminded them to practice health and safety protocol to prevent COVID-19.
Among the activities will push through are Misa Pasasalamat, Araw ng Davao Light Show, Dabawenyo Ako, and Lantaw Dabawenyo.
Duterte, earlier decided to cancel major events such as Pasiugdang Pagsaulog, Reyna Dabawenya, Ginoong Davao, Sayaw Pinoy, Kalingawan sa Sta. Ana, Hudyaka, Mutya ng Dabaw, Pasidungog, Araw ng Empleyado, Kanta Bidabawenyo, Parada Dabawenyo, and the Datu Bago Awards following the admonition earlier given by the Department of Health (DOH) on public gatherings.
