To announce our second winner of the 2020 America's Classics Award, we teamed up with @seattlefoodieadventure: congratulations to Oriental Mart in Seattle! To learn more about this Pike Place Market institution, take a look at our Stories. Want to see who else is taking home the America's Classics #jbfa? Tune in tomorrow.
The America’s Classics award is given by JBF to “locally owned eateries” which have a “timeless appeal” and “quality food that reflects the character” of the communities they serve.
Opened in 1973 by Filipina Mila Apostol at Pike Place Market, Oriental Mart served as a place where Filipino immigrants used to get “groceries they missed from back home.”
Currently, Oriental Mart is being managed by Mila’s daughters Joy and Leila.
“Joy runs the retail side of their market stall, while Leila oversees a counter in the style of the Philippines’ turo turo restaurants,” JBF wrote.
The restaurant serves Filipino classics such as pancit, adobo, and sinigang.
The James Beard Foundation is a non-profit organization that recognizes outstanding chefs, and culinary leaders in America.
