The Department of Education (DepEd) is set to recognize and reward the exemplary contribution of the field and central office in “making authentic learning happen” in the lives of public school learners.
DepEd, through the Office of the Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction, will organize the 2019-2020 Secretary’s award for Excellence in Curriculum and Instruction (SAFE CI) on May 2020. Education Secretary Leonor Briones, in DepEd Memorandum No. 002 series of 2020, announced the said activity that is anchored on the Civil Service Commission’s (CSC) Program on Awards and Incentives for Service Excellence (PRAISE) and DepEd Order No. 9 s. of 2002 entitled “Establishing the PRAISE in the DepEd.”
The award categories will include the “Most Learning-Focused Public Elementary School”; “Most Learning-Focused Public Junior High School”; “Most Learning-Focused Public Senior High School”; “Most Learning-Focused Schools Division Office”; “Most Learning-Focused Regional Office”; “Most Effective Division (CI strand, Central Office.”
The said activity will cover the DepEd Central Office as well as the field offices including schools, schools division offices, regional offices, and Curriculum Instruction (CI) bureaus or offices. Briones, in the said memo, noted that the head of the organizational unit winning the award shall also be recognized as “outstanding principal, schools division superintendent (SDS), regional director (RD), and CO Division chief or unit head.”
The ROs, Briones said, shall submit one official nominee corresponding to each award category. each CO curriculum and instructoion strand bureau/office shall nominate one division or unit. The schedule of activities for the Search will officially start on February 7 for the deadline for submission of the nomination folder to the CO; the stage 1 or screening and shortlisting period which covers the evaluation of the nomination write-up including required documents and shortlisting of nominees based on the set criteria for the first stage is scheduled from Feb. 7 to 28.
The Second stage will start from March 1-30 wherein onsite validation of qualified nominees from the first stage will be conducted. From April 13 to 15, the stage 3 or panel interview of finalists will commence. A two-day preparation and finalization will be held on April 16-17 and the Awarding is scheduled on May 20, 2020.
Based on the guidelines issued for the 2019-2020 SAFE IC, the awards seeks to “encourage creativity, innovativeness, integrity and productivity” in public service. “It also aims to showcase the best learning-focused practices among DepEd organizational units, officials, and employees,” the guidelines read.
DepEd said that a learning-focused and effective organization such as schools, division offices, regional offices, and the central office, utilize exemplary practice that “increase learning and academic achievement, relies on data-driven decision-making and provides frameworks and tools for organizing and designing effective teaching-learning activities.”
“Also, effective organization provide additional time for productive planning in implementing learning-focused activities, encourage collaboration among stakeholders, and evaluate the risk of every change made,” DepEd noted.
