DAVAO CITY – The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) will be shipping halal products in the reopening of Philippine Airlines route from Zamboanga to Kota Kinabalu in March.

In a statement, MinDA Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol said “ the agency intends to send Mindanao produced Halal Food, including chevon, beef and mango during the inaugural flight of the PAL Express from Zamboanga City to Kota Kinabalu on March 31.

“MinDA is now coordinating with the Philippine Airlines Express (PAL Express) management for the inaugural flight through its Corporate Communications Group headed by Carlo Carongoy,” Piñol added.

He said MinDA will optimize the new route by bringing in more business and trade interests by organizing trade and business missions.

“The agency is also organizing an agri-trade delegation to explore other agricultural supply opportunities for Mindanao products, especially those coming from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region,” Piñol said.

The revival of the route is expected to boost economic and trade activities in the sub-region.

“MinDA will be arranging packaged tours between Mindanao and Sabah to sustain the air service,” he said.

“We will also also promote the shipment of goods like fruits such as Cavendish banana and mango to Sabah, including Halal food,” Piñol added.

Piñol met with Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal in November last year where the chief minister agreed to get supply of Mindanao halal products to support the population and the growing number of tourists going to Sabah.

The Zamboanga-Kota Kinabalu air link will be the second route opened by PAL in the BIMP-EAGA Area.

Earlier, PAL announced that it will also serve the Davao-Manado, North Sulawesi route which was earlier re-opened by Garuda Indonesia.
