PDEA cracks down on ‘ecstasy’ use during Cebu’s Sinulog festivities

By Calvin Cordova

CEBU CITY—To prevent the proliferation of the party drug “ecstasy” during the Sinulog revelry, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Central Visayas (PDEA 7) has launched “Oplan EcstaNo .”

The PDEA 7 is expecting that there will be high demand for party drugs due to the numerous public events, such as concerts during the Sinulog.

With this, PDEA-7 regional Ddrector Wardley Getalla said they will be closely monitoring seaports and airports to prevent the smuggling of party drugs into the province.

“We will keep a close watch not only on bars and other party places but also on our airport and sea ports to intercept those who will be sneaking in party drugs,” said Getalla.

Getalla said random inspection using K9 units will be conducted in sea ports.

The PDEA 7 has already coordinated with organizers of street parties where K9 units will also be deployed.

“We have already coordinated with various law enforcement agencies such as the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines and Bureau of Fire Protection to help us in Oplan EcstaNo,” said Getalla.

Getalla said they are on the lookout for three kinds of ecstasy: the tablet and liquid forms and the “crystal party”, which is the newest kind of ecstasy.

“There’s already this crystal ecstasy. There was an incident in Manila wherein a person who took it suffered seizure. This crystal ecstasy is more potent because it is quickly absorbed by the human system. Its street name is mole. This is more potent that’s why there are reported deaths due to over dosage,” Getalla said.

The PDEA 7 is asking for public cooperation since it cannot monitor all the people in a certain event, Getalla said.

“If they notice some suspicious persons, they have to immediately report o the police,” Getalla said.

Getalla also advised parents to always remind their children not to accept drinks from just anyone since it may contain deadly party drugs.
