DAVAO CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) in Davao Region once again urged the parents to submit their children for vaccination in the upcoming third round of Mindanao-wide massive synchronized polio vaccination, which will start next week.
The department is calling those parents who have not yet submitted their children for vaccination in the first and second round of the Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio, which its third round is slated to be held from January 20 to February 2 this year.
DOH-Davao regional director Dr. Annabelle Yumang said the anti-polio immunization drive, which aims to ensure all the children are protected against polio, will be conducted in public hospitals and health centers, and even in the malls also if needed.
Yumang earlier mentioned that the department was targeting around 575,845 children ages five years old and below for vaccination against polio in Region 11. She said they were hoping that around 95 percent of the total number will be covered by the campaign.
An Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) will be given to children, particularly for Polio Virus Type 2, since there are three types of polio viruses. The type 2 vaccine for polio will be given as positive cases earlier recorded in the country are for type 2 polio viruses.
The DOH declared a polio epidemic after four cases have been confirmed last year, which included a three-year-old female from Lanao del Sur, five-year-old boy from Laguna, and three cases from Mindanao. The Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio seeks to eliminate the virus.
