DAVAO CITY – At least 37 people were injured while a girl died after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake rocked the southern portion of Mindanao on Sunday afternoon.
According to the latest situation report of the Police Regional Office 11, all the casualties were from Davao del Sur, while the fatality was recorded in the town of Matanao.
Aside from the casualties, 19 houses were also partially damaged, six buildings including that of the Philippine National Police and the new Municipal Police Stations in the towns of Sta. Cruz, Padada, Kiblawan, Sulop, and Matanao were damaged.
In Davao City, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management office recorded no casualties here. However, major cracks were found on the structures of the Center Point Matina overpass, Palmetto Condo, and other business establishments.
In Barangay Lizada, Davao City, a two-story house collapsed while seven other houses were partially damaged. There were also eight families who evacuated to the barangay gym for safety.
The police also reported that power interruptions were recorded in the whole Davao Occidental and in areas in Davao del Sur.
Government agencies, including the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Red Cross, Municipal Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Councils, Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils, the Armed Forces and the police are conducting search and retrieval operations at the Southern Trade Commercial Store which collapsed after the earthquake.
In a statement, PRO-11 assured that the Disaster Incident Management Task Group has already been activated and emergency operation centers were initially established in the affected areas to assist residents.
