Novaliches Bishop Roberto Gaa will preside over a high mass at 9 a.m. on Friday, December 13, at the Santa Lucia Parish on J.P. Rizal Street, Novaliches, Quezon City, in solemn commemoration of the Feast of Saint Lucy (Santa Lucia), the patron saint of the blind and those with eye problems.
A solemn procession will be held after the 6 p.m. mass.
Feast rites will also be held in Sasmuan, Pampanga, where the equivalent of Obando’s popular fertility fiesta, the “Kuraldal,” in which devotees dance their petitions and prayers, will be celebrated. The highlight of the observance will be a procession of the image of St. Lucy amid shouts of “Viva Santa Lucia!” Puera Sakit!” There will also be street dancing around the chapel in Barangay Santa Lucia, Sasmuan.
In Venice, Italy, pilgrims and devotees traditionally gather on her feast day at her major shrine, the Church of San Geremia, where her sacred relics are kept.
Popular in many parts of the world, St. Lucy is one of seven women, excluding the Blessed Mother, who is commemorated by name in the Roman Canon. The Catholic Church recognizes her courage in defense of the faith. She lost her life during the persecution of Christians in the early 4th century.
