FDA warns public against 5 unregistered food supplements

By Analou De Vera

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned the public against the purchase and consumption of five unregistered food supplements.

The FDA named the five unregistered food supplements as Muscletech Performance Series Clear Muscle Dietary Supplement (168 capsules), MHP Maximum Human Performance Xpel Diuretic Maximum Strength Herbal Diuretic Dietary Supplement (80 capsules), E.S.P. EXTREME Extreme Energy Stimulant Pre-Workout Watermelon Flavor Dietary Supplement (10 oz.), E.S.P. EXTREME Extreme Energy Stimulant Pre-Workout Fruit Punch Flavor Dietary Supplement (10 oz.), and E.S.P. EXTREME Extreme Energy Stimulant Pre-Workout Apple Flavor Dietary Supplement (10 oz.).

“The FDA verified through post-marketing surveillance that the above-mentioned food supplements are not authorized and the Certificates of Product Registration (CPR) have not been issued,” said the agency in its advisory no. 2019-479.

“Since these unregistered food supplements have not gone through [the] evaluation process of the FDA, the agency cannot assure their quality and safety. The use of such violative products may pose health risks to consumers,” the FDA added.

The FDA advised the public not to purchase the said products.

“All concerned establishments are warned not to distribute violative food supplements until they have been issued the appropriate authorization, a License to Operate (LTO) for the establishment, and a CPR for the food supplement,” the FDA said.

The agency advised the public to always check if a food supplement is registered with the FDA by using its website’s ‘Search’ feature.

The FDA encouraged the public to report any sale or distribution of unregistered food supplements through its online reporting facility, eReport, which can be accessed at www.fda.gov.ph/ereport.
