There are 15 aspirants for the post of Supreme Court (SC) associate justice that was left vacant with the promotion last October 23 of then Associate Justice Diosdado M. Peralta as Chief Justice and head of the country’s judiciary.
Twelve of the aspirants are associate justices of the Court of Appeals. The three others are Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Amparo M. Cabotaje Tang, Court Administrator Jose Midas P. Marquez, and Anti-Red Tape Authority Deputy Director General Ernesto V. Perez.
Aspirants from the CA are Associate Justices Ramon A. Cruz, Eduardo B. Peralta Jr., Samuel H. Gaerlan, Jhosep Y. Lopez, Pablito A. Perez, Maria Filomena D. Singh, Oscar V. Badelles, Manuel M. Barrios, Ramon M. Bato Jr., Apolinario D. Bruselas Jr., Ramon R. Garcia, and Ricardo R. Rosario.
The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) — the constitutional office that accepts, screens, and nominates appointments to the judiciary — has set public interviews of the aspirants.
To be interviewed on Monday, December 9, at the SC’s division hearing room are Cruz and Peralta.
Ernesto V. Perez, Gaerlan, Lopez, Pablito A. Perez and Singh are set for interview on December 18.
Badelles, Barrios, Bato, Bruselas, Cabotaje Tang, Garcia, Marquez, and Rosario will no longer be interviewed because their previous interviews are still valid, the JBC said.
Once the JBC submits to President Duterte its nominees to the vacant post, the President has 90 days from October 23, 2019 to appoint Peralta’s replacement as associate justice.
