With the May 2020 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls officially postponed, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it will now concentrate on preparing for the May, 2022 presidential polls.
“The Comelec will now focus its energies on preparing for the 2022 National and Local Elections,” Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said in a statement.
The Comelec welcomed the signing of Republic Act 11462, saying its passage finally “puts to rest the question of whether or not the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections will be held next year.”
President Duterte signed Republic Act 11462 postponing the village and youth polls to December, 2022 on Tuesday.
The postponement of the village and SKpolls, however, saddened a Catholic prelate.
Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo noted how the said polls have already been postponed several times in the past.
“There has been several postponements of the BSKE already,” he said in an interview.
“I do not know what kind of message they are sending on how seriously the national leadership values the barangays and the SKs,” added Pabillo.
The barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls have been postponed twice in the past – the first time from October, 2016 to October, 2017, and again from October, 2017 to May, 2018.
