The Department of Health (DOH) said on Saturday that it is targeting to set up at least one rehabilitation center in each region in the country.
“Our target is to ensure there is one TRC (treatment and rehabilitation center) per region. [We are] on the way to accomplish that,” said Health Secretary Francisco Duque III in a media forum in Quezon City.
Duque noted that there are around 13 to 14 treatment and rehabilitation centers nationwide.
“We have been very aggressive in establishing treatment and rehabilitation centers across the country,” he said.
The health chief noted that drug addiction is considered a mental health disorder.
“We have to make sure that it is being addressed by the government in tandem with the LGUs (local government units) because the way to address this is not just TRC- based but (also) community-based. Community has [an] important role in services for victims of drug addiction,” Duque emphasized.
Duque said that they are coordinating with the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) with regards to the funding, which is needed in order to hire additional manpower.
“We are working with DBM to increase the number of plantilla positions or at least the budget to allow us to hire on a contractual basis certain human resource for health–professionals like psychiatrists, psychologists,” said Duque.
