The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) confirmed the death of another PMA plebe on Friday apparently by drowning.
Cadet Fourth class Mario Telan Jr. of Alpha Company of the Cadet Corps of the Armed Forces of the Philippines was reportedly last seen attending his swimming class scheduled at 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. He was later found in the 15-foot deep end of the pool after a search was conducted when he could not be accounted for in his next classes.
He was rushed to the Fort del Pilar Station Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.
“PMA deeply grieves for this unfortunate loss of one of our sons. All necessary assistance will be extended to the bereaved family and loved ones of Cdt 4CL Telan,” the PMA said in a statement.
“In coordination with PNP Baguio, a thorough investigation is now being conducted to determine the events that transpired leading to this incident. All needed actions and protocols are being undertaken to deal with any infraction and/or irregularity. Likewise, all swimming classes of the cadets are temporarily halted until such time that the incident has been properly addressed,” it added.
Telan was the third PMA cadet to have died since September 2019.
Telan’s classmate, Cadet Fourthclass Darwin Dormitorio died on September 18 due to hazing.
Meanwhile, Second Class Cedrick Gadia died from esophageal cancer on October 28. (with a report from Martin Sadongdong)
