Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Commissioner Rowena Guanzon wants more sectors to be included in the Local Absentee Voting.
“I have a draft of proposed amendments to Local Absentee Voting Act, to include all COMELEC, PNP, AFP, DepEd, PWD, Senior Citizens, Indigenous People, and pregnant women,” she said in her Twitter account @commrguanzon.
“So they can vote one month before election day,” added Guanzon.
To note, the LAV may be availed by government officials and employees, members of the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippine and media practitioners that are registered voters but will not be able to vote on Election Day due to the performance of their functions.
LAV allows qualified individuals to cast their votes at an earlier date since they are temporarily assigned to perform election-related duties on Election Day in places where they are not registered voters.
Guanzon is hoping that by expanding the LAV, many will be encouraged to vote.
“We need an inclusive democracy. We must think of ways for them to vote with ease,” she said.
“This way, they will be encouraged to vote,” added Guanzon.
The poll official is expected to submit the draft measure to the Senate Electoral Reform Committee of Senator Imee Marcos next month.
