Driver of ill-fated truck to face charges – LTO

By Joseph Jubelag

GENERAL SANTOS CITY– Authorities are set to file criminal charges against the truck driver whose recklessness resulted in the death of twenty people and wounding of fourteen others after the truck he was driving plunged into a deep ravine in T’boli, South Cotabato last September 17.

Robert Kiunisala, Land Transportation Office-12 assistant regional director, said criminal and administrative charges will be filed against Robel Rabara, 41, after he was found positive for shabu in a drug test.

He said criminal charges will be filed against the suspect while administrative sanction will be meted to revoke his driver’s license.

The LTO official said the accident was caused by human error and mechanical problem due to a malfunctioned brake.

Survivors told police investigators the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating the mountainous road in Barangay Lamsalome, Tboli on its way to Surallah, South Cotabato from this city.

The truck with more than 30 people on board came from a beach outing at a local beach resort in the city.

Rolly Doane Aquino, provincial disaster risk reduction management office operations officer, said the provincial government had ordered the setting up of barricades and early warning signage along the highway which traverses the mountain villages bordering the towns of Polomolok and T’boli.
