Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr.said on Thursday said that Philippines stands to lose if it decides to raise Manila’s arbitral win against China before the United Nations (UN) because the world body is dominated by countries that are grateful to China.
In a tweet, Locsin said “We will lose in UN which is dominated by countries grateful to China for its indisputable generosity in development aid.”
“We’ve always lost Non-Aligned Movement votes to include our Arbitral Award. My many good friends in (the) UN (will) vote against us. We’ve nothing comparable to offer,” he added.
Former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario suggested that the Duterte administration raise the Manila’s arbitral win against China at the UN General Assembly next week.
Malacanang rejected Del Rosario’s suggestion and called it a “futile exercise.”
The Philippines will address the world body on September 28, 2019 with Locsin representing President Rodrigo Duterte.
