CAMP COL. RAFAEL C. RODRIGUEZ, Butuan City – The regional command of Caraga Police Regional Office 13 (PRO 13) on Thursday ordered the provincial and municipal police offices in Surigao del Sur to conduct a thorough investigation on the explosion of a motorboat where eight of its crew were injured in the Port of Cantilan, Surigao del Sur province on Wednesday.
Lt. Col. Christian L. Rafols ll, chief of PRO 13 Regional Public Information Office (PRO 13-RPIO) said initial reports to PRO 13 Regional Director P/Brig. Gen. Joselito T. Esquivel, Jr. given by the Cantilan Municipal Police Station (MPS) and Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office (PPO) indicated that a cargo motorboat named M/V LPC was about to leave Cantilan Port, in Purok 3, Barangay Consuelo, Cantilan town of that same province at about 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday when the cargo boat exploded immediately after its engine was started.
Initial investigation showed that the boat was loaded with blue plastic drums filled with gasoline delivered from a fuel truck with an approximate volume of 30,000 liters.
The cargo boat crew sustained first and second degree burns.
Personnel of Cantilan Fire Station and Cantilan MPS Rescue Team rescued the cargo boat personnel.
The injured persons were identified as Juvel A. Dasera, 39 of Purok-5, Navarro; Julever A. Dasera, 24 of Purok-1, Taruc; Eunerio A. Caindoy, 40 of Bagakay, Del Carmen; Joel P. Consigna, 50 of Purok-5, Navarro; Kevin A. Dasera, 19 of Purok-1; and June Piao Bohol, 24 of Purok-1, Taruc, all of Socorro town; Junerel C. Ruaya, 26 of Barangay 13, Dapa; and Reneboy T. Tuburan, 36 of Barangay. 2, both of Dapa town, all of Surigao del Norte province.
The injured crew was rushed to Madrid District Hospital, Madrid town, Surigao del Sur for treatment.
