ILOILO CITY — A total of 50 convicts of heinous crimes who were previously released through the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) law have surrendered in the Western Visayas region.
Police Brigadier General Rene Pamuspusan, PRO-6 director, said that Iloilo province had the most number of GCTA-freed convicts who surrendered with 15.
Eleven convicts also surrendered in Aklan province, 10 in Negros Occidental province, six in Capiz province, four in Iloilo City, three in Antique province, and one in Bacolod City.
No GCTA-freed convict surrendered in Guimaras province.
While 50 is a substantial number, PRO-6 records showed there are a total of 149 GCTA-freed convicts across Western Visayas.
“If they don’t surrender by September 19, they are considered fugitives,” Pamuspusan said.
Pamuspusan said those who surrendered will be processed and will immediately be turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
The region’s top cop had a command conference on Wednesday with the chiefs of police of the six provinces as well as the police chiefs of Iloilo and Bacolod cities to catch the remaining GCTA-freed convicts.
