The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on Tuesday that it will be installing 20 reels of fiber optic cables for the Metro Rail Transit System Line 3 (MRT-3).
The cables will be used for signaling and communications systems.
“Kung dati, copper wires lamang ang ginagamit para sa signaling system ng MRT-3, ngayon dahil sa kumprehensibong rehabilitasyon ng rail line, mapapalitan na ng mas modernong kagamitan ang system,” DOTr said in its official Facebook page.
(Before, we just use copper wires in MRT-3 signaling system, but because of the comprehensive rehabilitation of the rail line, we are now replacing them with more modern equipment.)
Sumitomo-MHI-TESP, the new maintenance provider of MRT-3, targets to complete the cable installation this year.
The DOTr and MRT-3 managements are currently testing and commissioning the fiber optics to ensure the quality of the wiring.
The railway signaling systems aim to keep the trains safe by keeping them at a safe distance from each other.
