Transwoman Gretchen Diez revealed on Wednesday that President Rodrigo Duterte is eyeing to hold a national convention for the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+).
“He promised that he will look into it,” shared Diez who met Duterte in Malacañang on Monday.
Diez also said that she is glad that Duterte is very positive and aware of what is happening.
“I wouldn’t know that the most powerful man in the country would be very concerned with me proving only the point that this is happening to me and it could happen to anybody,” she added.
However, Lagablab (Lesbian and Gay Legislative Advocacy Network-Philippines) spokesperson Naomi Fontanos doubts the president’s support.
“[He] is known for giving empty promises, we appreciate his support but the LGBT community will not be used to cover up many human rights abuses,” said Fontanos.
Fontanos also added that the president is known for ‘flip flopping’.
“Maybe yesterday he said he will support the LGBT community, but on December he’ll say, I changed my mind, I was just joking.” she ended.
According to Diez, Duterte is eyeing the Philippine International Convention Center as a venue for the LGBTQ+ national convention.
