Former Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) secretary and chairman of ABS CBN foundation Regina Paz “Gina” Lopez has died after battling brain cancer.
In a statement, ABS-CBN chairman Mark Lopez said Gina knew her purpose since she was young.
“At an age when people are just figuring out what they want to do in life, she already knew her purpose. She left a comfortable life to devote her time and energy to help uplift other people’s lives.”
“We will miss Gina’s light, as a private person, as a leader, and as a crusader. While she left us a void that cannot be filled, we take comfort in knowing that with love, like she had shown us, there remains hope and beauty in the world we live in.” he added.
ABS-CBN Corporation said Lopez dedicated her life in serving the people.
“Gina was the pillar of strength that pushed ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. (AFI) to achieve what seemed to be impossible. Her caring heart and selfless kind of love inspired people within and beyond the organization to help and serve others.” it said.
Lopez’s commitment to her advocacies gave birth to Bantay Bata 163, Bantay Kalikasan, and other programs under ABS-CBN Foundation.
She served as Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission chairperson until her appointment as DENR secretary. She pushed for numerous campaigns and projects, including Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig, No To Mining in Palawan, the reforestation of the La Mesa Watershed, and the TV program “G Diaries” which made a huge and lasting impact on communities.
Lopez’s memorial service will be on August 22 to 23 at the La Mesa Eco Park from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Instead of flowers and Mass cards, the family requests that donations be made to the ABS-CBN Foundation.
