KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato- Local disaster officials have ordered the evacuation of about 100 families in Barangay Ned, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, after a 200-meter-wide sinkhole threatened to swallow up houses.
Rolly Duane Aquino, operations chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, said residents in sitios Eldolog, Tuburan, Polosubong, Kiantay and Tawang Dagat in Barangay Ned have been ordered to leave.
He said village and local officials are looking for safer ground where the affected residents can be relocated.
Ariel Agustin, supervising geologist of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau regional office, said the sinkhole was first reported last year, but the villagers, most of them T’boli and Manobo tribesmen, ignored the evacuation advisory.
Agustin said the affected area is located in the mountains on the borders of Lake Sebu, Maitum, Sarangani and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.
