CEBU CITY – The Army’s 53rd Engineer Brigade launched the first all-female Vertical Construction Team (VCT) in the Visayas to provide general engineering support.
Maj. Jonathan Esnara said in a media release that all Engineer Construction Battalions under the 53rd Engineer Brigade is required to organize a seven-woman VCT team that will be trained to do masonry, carpentry, plumbing, and other construction-related work.
Esnara said that after the training, the members of the team will receive a certification from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) that signifies their eligibility to perform construction-related activities.
“The inclusion of women in the Philippine Army is indeed a historic and significant milestone in women empowerment,” he said.
To promote women’s rights and gender equality in the military, it is important to provide them with the same training and opportunities for career advancement and personal development as their male counterparts, Esnara said.
The 53rd Engineer Brigade also achieved prominence this year for being the first major Army unit to be led by a female commander, Col. Joselyn Bandarlipe, Esnara said.
