The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has suspended the voter registration in Sto. Tomas, Batangas from September 4 to 11.
In Resolution No. 10559, the poll body said this is to give way to the holding of a plebiscite in the municipality.
“There is a need to suspend the conduct the system of continuing registration of voters to give way for the preparatory activities and winding up in connection with the plebiscite,” read the Resolution dated August 5.
“Now, therefore, the Commission resolves to suspend the system of continuing registration of voters in the Municipality of Sto Tomas, Batangas from September 4 to 11,” it further read.
The Comelec said voter registration in the municipality will resume on September 12.
Last October, President Duterte signed the law converting Sto Tomas from a municipality into a component city of Batangas.
The Comelec then set the plebiscite to ratify the said conversion provided by Republic Act No. 11086 on September 7, 2019.
The continuing voter registration resumed August 1 ahead of the May 2020 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls. It will end on September 30.
On Thursday, the Comelec said it already received more than 100,000 applications during the first week of the voter registration period.
According to the poll body, it received a total of 100,399 applications nationwide since voter registration resumed this month.
Of the said number, 92,392 applications came from regular voters or those 18 years old and above; while the other 8,007 are SK voters or those aged 15 to 17.
