Motorists traversing Quezon City thoroughfares were advised to take alternate routes on Monday (July 22) as part of Commonwealth Avenue will be closed for President Rodrigo Duterte’s fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Quezon City Police District director, BGen. Joselito Esquivel Jr., warned motorists that heavy traffic is expected, particularly on roads leading to and from the Batasang Pambansa Complex where the President will deliver his SONA.

Esquivel, with National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director, Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, led a walk-through and on-site inspection along Commonwealth Avenue on Wednesday to identify the zipper lane and the protest centers.

Beginning 12:01 a.m. on Monday, the entire stretch of Commonwealth Avenue, from Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC) to Fairview Center Mall (FCM), both northbound and southbound, will be cleared and illegally parked vehicles will be towed, while the road’s northbound lane, from CW Home Depot to Sandiganbayan will also be partially closed.

The eastbound of IBP Road from Filinvest 1 to Sinagtala will also be closed for traffic around 4:30 p.m. to give way to expected demonstrations of pro-administration rallyists.

Authorities will totally close the road starting from CW Home Depot up to Sandiganbayan for cause-oriented protesters who will put up their stage in front of AFNI Building along Commonwealth Avenue.

A zipper lane covering the closed area, occupying two inner southbound lanes will also be opened once the roads will be in total lockdown.

Esquivel has advised the public to just stay at home on SONA day if they have nothing important to do but assured those who have work that they are ready to address traffic situations.

The QCPD chief also advised the public to take the suggested alternate routes:

For motorists coming from QMC to Fairview:

From QMC, take Zipper Lane at the island breaker in front of CW Home Depot U turn-slot and take inner lanes.

The end and exit point of the Zipper Lane is at the island breaker of Sandiganbayan U-turn slot.

For light vehicles coming from QMC to Fairview:

From QMC, take North Avenue, turn right to Mindanao Avenue, turn right to Old Sauyo Road, turn left to Chestnut Street, turn right to Dahlia Street, turn left to Fairlane Street, then exit to Commonwealth Avenue to destination.

For light vehicles coming from Fairview to QMC:

From Fariview, take right turn to Regalado Avenue, right turn to Old Sauyo Road, turn right to Mindanao Avenue, take U-turn at Quirino Highway to Mindanao Avenue (southbound), left turn to North Avenue to QMC to destination.

For vehicles along QMC, they may take right turn to North Avenue, right turn to Mindanao Avenue, right turn to Old Sauyo Road or Quirino Highway to destination.

If IBP Road is in total lockdown, all light vehicles shall take alternate route from QMC to Filinvest 1 & 2, Barangay Bagong Silangan and some inner portions of Barangay Batasan Hills shall take zipper lane at the island breaker in front of CW Home Depot U-turn slot and take inner lanes.

The end of the zipper lane is at the breaker of Sandiganbayan U-turn slot, then right turn on Litex-Payatas Road, right turn on Abris Street, right turn on Bougainvillea Street, right turn to Lower Jasmin Street, right turn to Ilang-Ilang Street, left turn to Santan Street, left to Sampaguita Street, left turn to Violago Road and meters away right turn and enter the Gate 3 of Filinvest 2. To Barangay Bagong Silangan, just follow Violago Road.

Meanwhile, to Filinvest 1, motorists should have an agreement with Filinvest 2 in order to pass by their subdivision to reach Batasan-San Mateo Road then enter Kagawad Street, right turn to Resolution Street, right turn to Senatorial Street, right turn to Sinagtala Sreet, left turn to Masbate or Cotabato Street, left turn to Filinvest 1 Road and enter gate of Filinvest 1 Subdivision.

For light vehicles going to Filinvest 2, San Mateo Rizal and Marikina City:

Take alternate route from Commonwealth-Sandigan, turn right on Sinagtala Street, turn right on Senatorial Street, turn left on Resolution Street, left turn on Kagawad Road, then right turn on Batasan-San Mateo Road.

After the SONA by around 6 p.m., authorities said that only westbound lane of IBP Road leading to Sandiganbayan tunnel shall be opened for VIPs exiting from aouth gate of the House of Representatives going to Commonwealth Avenue.

However, the westbound lane from Litex to HOR South gate will remain closed until further notice.
