“This is something that is very self-serving. The politicians will really want to entrench themselves in power. Are they the only ones qualified to get elected?” Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said in an interview.

He urged lawmakers to focus their attention on addressing the country’s many problems.

“The country has many problems that need to be given attention more than their self-serving interests,” said Pabillo.

Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes also opposed the idea especially since it will remove the chances of less wealthy candidates to serve as public officials.

“Poor [but] deserving candidates will have no chance to serve Congress,” he said.

“This is very bad. They are really like crocodiles. They want to rule the country forever through their dynasties,” said Bastes.

Earlier, Cayetano proposed to either lift or extend the term limits of lawmakers.

The lawmaker believes such a proposal is more practical and productive for the country.
