A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Surigao del Sur at 4:42 a.m. Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The earthquake was tectonic in origin and its epicenter traced nine kilometers (kms) southeast of Carrascal, Surigao del Sur.
The tremor was felt as a strong shaking at Intensity 5 in Carrascal, Surigao Del Sur; and Butuan City.
Meanwhile, it was moderately strong” at Intensity 4 in Surigao City; Tandag City; Gingoog City and Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental; Tandag City; and Talacogon, Agusan Del Sur.
It was felt as a weak tremor at Intensity 3 in Cagwait, Surigao Del Sur; Balingoan, Salay, Balingasag, Jasaan and Villanueva, Misamis Oriental; and Cagayan De Oro City.
Mambajao, Camiguin felt the quake as a “slight” shaking at Intensity 2.
The quake which had a depth of 5 km, meanwhile, was felt under the following instrumental intensities:
Intensity IV- Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental
Intensity II – Cebu City; Borongan City
Intensity I – Bislig City; Cagayan de Oro City
The 5.5-magnitude quake was followed by aftershocks measuring 3.8-magnitude and 1.9-magnitude at 5:15 a.m. and 1:07 p.m., respectively, but both aftershocks were unfelt. (with a report from Ellalyn De Vera-Ruiz)
