Veronica Cunan, SM Baliwag mall’s public relations officer, said that the “Lutong Bahay ni Nanay” cooking competition aims to promote healthy diet and physical activity among individuals and families.

The senior citizens introduced their unique and healthy dishes.

Barangay Makinabang, headed by Remedios Leonardo, emerged as the champion with the winning recipe Crispy Banana Blossom with Malunggay Leaves and their unique beverage called Camote Tops Juice.

Aside from its unique components, Barangay Makinabang’s recipe was cited for its nutritional ingredients such as malunggay commonly known as an antioxidant that helps combat malnutrition, lowers blood sugar level and cholesterol.

Banana Blossoms are a rich source of vitamins and minerals and manages diabetes and anemia. Camote Tops do wonders to the heart, eye, and bones and have antibacterial components.

Tied on the second spot were Barangay Tibag lead by Norma Ignacio with their version of Pork Binagoongan fused with gata or coconut milk, and Barangay Tangos lead by Carmen Gonzales with their Beef Kare-Kare made with rice flour.

Gracing the event were senior citizen officials lead by FSCAP Baliwag Chapter President Narciso Sta. Juana, OSCA Head Eligio Francisco Jr. and SM City Baliwag Mall Officers.

“Lutong Bahay ni Nanay” Senior’s Day at the Mall is a program under SM Cares, a division of SM Foundation for Elderly Care— the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Group of Companies, that aims to honor and nurture senior citizens in every community where SM serves.
