Two politicians, including Pres. Duterte’s former special assistant were added to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF’s) Executive Committee (ExeCom) on Wednesday afternoon.
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Danilo Lim said the new members of the ExeCom were Sen. Bong Go, and Laguna’s 1st district Representative Dan Fernandez, a former actor. Go became a juror in the 2018 MMFF.
Go and Fernandez were both present during the press briefing where the four selected official script entries to the 2019 MMFF were announced.
The MMFF Selection Committee, headed by National Artist for Film Bienvenido Lumbera, picked these top four scripts: (K) Ampon of Quantum Films starring Derek Ramsay and Kris Aquino; Miracle n Cell # 7 of Viva Communications, Inc. starring Aga Mulach and Nadine Lustre; Mission Unstapabol: The Don of Identity of APT Entertainment, Inc. starring Vic Sotto and Maine Mendoza; and Mommalland of ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc. starring Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis.
MMFF said there were 26 scripts submitted by 22 production companies.
On the other hand, the deadline for the finished films category is on September 20. The Selection Committee will watch all the finished films and chose four to join the top four scripts for the MMFF 2019.
The deadline for the scripts of the short film category is on August 15.
Here are the criteria of the Selection Committee: Commercial Appeal-40 percent, Artistic Excellence-40 percent, Filipino Cultural Sensibility-10 percent, and Global Appeal-10 percent.
Jose Arturo Garcia, MMDA general manager, justified the selection of the top four entries for MMFF 2019 by saying that Commercial Value is very important.
“Importante talaga ‘yung Commercial Value. Sabi nga natin gusto nating tulungan yung pelikulang Pilipino. Kung mag-flat ang sales niyan syempre hindi uunlad ‘yung financial nila (The Commercial Value is really important. Like what we said, we want to help the Filipino film industry. If the sales would go flat, of course their financial aspect will not grow),” he said.
Twice a year
Go suggested to the ExeCom to hold MMFF twice a year come 2020, saying such is to boost the film industry in the country.
“I am suggesting to the ExeCom to make the MMFF twice a year next year. We will talk about its details after this year’s film festival,” he said.
“This is for the betterment of the film industry in the country,” he added.
Fernandez, meanwhile, said that he will push for the welfare of people working in the film industry.
