LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Resiliency Council (PDRRMRC) has selected Paoay town as the pilot area in the province for Thursday’s 2nd Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED).
Marcel Tabije of the council said at least 500 participants are expected to join the drill at Paoay National High School (PNHS) at 2 p.m.
“We conduct quarterly the earthquake drill in the province to test the overall efficiency and usefulness of the preparedness, response, and recovery plans of the residents; and to evaluate the systems of existing policies and protocols in our localities in the occurrence of similar situation,” said Tabije.
He said the drill is usually conducted in barangays, schools, and malls, places where big crowds converge.
“The PDRRMRC has focused on educating residents in coastal areas in the province because they are vulnerable to the threats of tsunami in the occurrence of strong tremors,” he said.
The earthquake drill starts with a ceremonial pressing of alarm button followed by the demonstration of “duck, cover, and hold” technique, and other evacuation procedures, and emergency response.
Representatives from the Provincial Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO), the Provincial Health Office (PHO), the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office (INPPO), the Bureau of Fire Prevention (BFP) and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) will evaluate the level of preparedness of the municipality.
“We conducted this quarterly earthquake drill in the local government units (LGUs) with an ultimate aim to reduce the casualties during disaster; and make the province more prepared and safe,” he said.
The next quarterly earthquake drills in the province are on August 8 and November 14.
