DAVAO CITY – City Mayor Sara Duterte denied receiving a vehicle from Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy, an international evangelist who is a close friend of President Rodrigo R. Duterte.
The local chief executive was reacting to a story published by Rappler in May 2016 quoting the President, then mayor of Davao, of saying that she “went crazy” over an Expedition vehicle that was supposedly gifted to him by Quiboloy.
“This incident never happened,” she said in a statement released by the City Information Office on Monday.
She surmised her father might have referred to another “Inday,” had incorrectly remembered events, or another joke reported by the media “media hook, line, and sinker.”
“Perhaps, the story told by PRD, the time when he was still Mayor of Davao in May 2016, was just another one of his jokes, which he usually peddles to the media. The problem was it went unchecked and was taken by the media hook, line, and sinker. It was reported as truth.”
She dismissed it as a “journalistic mishap,” which was “unfair and injurious to me as someone named in the article, something which would have been avoided had the writer conducted a simple process of verification.”
