Senator Francis Escudero joined Wednesday the Department of National Defense in condemning in the strongest possible words the action of a Chinese vessel abandoning Filipino fishermen after it struck their fishing vessel at the contested West Philippine Sea (WPS) last Sunday.
Escudero also joined his colleagues for lambasting ‘’the actions (and lack of it) of the Chinese vessel, its captain and crew, especially in leaving the 22-man Filipino crew who would have perished were it not for the Vietnamese vessel who saved them.’’
‘’I call on the Navy, Coast Guard and the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) to investigate the incident and to hold the captain and crew of the Chinese vessel liable and accountable.
But there was a mild reaction from Senate President Vicente C. Sotto on the WPS incident.
‘’If it’s between two fishing vessels, then it must be an accident. Nevertheless, DFA should inform the Chinese government of the incident and find out what happened,’’ Sotto said.
