Militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan is appealing for any forms of assistance from the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) after 11 rallyists, including 3 minors, were arrested by Cavite authorities during the Independence Day celebration on Wednesday.
In a text message sent to the Manila Bulletin, Casey Cruz, regional coordinator of the Southern Tagalog progressive group said: “We will need any assistance CHR can extend to us para palayain na ang 11 katao na hinuli na walang kaso.”
These include Rassel Moran, 22, of BAYAN Southern Tagalog; LIGA-Cavite members Julius Gonzales, 29; Anie Bonifacio, 34; and Jhanet Llano, 19, and Ronald Valderama, 19 of Anakbayan Cavite.
Three other non-affiliates, including a certain Dante Penede Jr., and three minors aged 16 and 17 were also arrested in Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit before the program began according to Gabriela Women’s Party regional coordinator Shirley Songalia.
Songalia said some individuals experienced physical abuse upon their apprehension such as “sinikmuraan, dinibdiban, pinalo ng baril sa bibig, at pambububog.”
As of press time, the Kawit, Cavite chief-of-police has not yet responded to any media query.
