President Duterte is waiting for the recommendation of top security and defense officials on the government’s next course of action after the United States placed Huawei on a trade blacklist, Malacañang said Tuesday.
Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said the National Security Adviser and the Department of Defense are likely to study the Huawei issue and submit a recommendation to the President.
“I suppose the Department of National Defense, as well as the National Security Adviser, are studying that matter and the President will be waiting for whatever recommendation they have on that,” Panelo said during a Palace press briefing when asked about government’s action to deal with possible security risk posed by the Chinese telecom firm.
On whether Huawei mobile users in the country should now switch to another brand, Panelo said he could not competently respond since he has no knowledge on the matter. Panelo admitted though that he is an Apple iPhone, not Huawei, user.
The United States earlier sought to ban Chinese telecom firm Huawei from doing business within the country for supposedly undermining American interests. US President Trump has issued an executive order declaring a national emergency to ban sales and use of telecommunication equipment from companies that pose risks to national security.
Google has reportedly suspended providing updates of its Android software to Huawei devices following the US ban.
