149 cops deployed to Isabela for special polls

Updated

By Aaron Recuenco

The Philippine National Police (PNP) deployed 149 policemen to a barangay in Jones town, Isabela, where a special election was held on Monday.

PNP chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde said the deployment of additional policemen is aimed at ensuring that no group or personality would again sabotage the election in the area.

It was recalled that on May 14 or a day after the May 13 polls, gunmen intercepted a truck carrying election canvassers and election paraphernalia in Barangay Sta. Isabel.

The gunmen then took the two vote-counting machines and ballots and burned them before fleeing. The getaway vehicle of the gunmen was found abandoned but burned.

Two people were already arrested in a follow-up operation.
