However, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez remains optimistic that they will have higher voter turnouts.

“We expect to see a voter turn out about 75 percent to 78 percent,” he said during the launch of their voter education campaign with Grab Philippines called OneDestination, in Intramuros, Manila, Friday.

“There is room to believe to be cautiously optimistic that we will have higher turns out than expected,” added Jimenez.

The poll official believes their campaign with the ride-hailing app will help drive up the number.

“The activation of voters when they ride Grab vehicles through this voter education campaign will drive up that number even more. Especially since a lot of people decide to vote only on election day,” Jimenez said.

“If it happens that you are on the road and you take a Grab car and you receive this pamphlet, there is an increased chance that you will decide on that day: ‘Hey, I think I wanna vote.’ So, I expect to see higher than average voter turnouts,” he added.

“We are hoping that we come close to 80 to 81 percent of result of 2016,” said Jimenez.

According to the poll official, the 2016 elections had 81 percent voting turnout.

During the launch, the new jingle of the poll body for the midterm polls entitled “Malayang Halalan” was also being played in the background.

Jimenez said they hope that voters will be inspired to vote when they listen to the song.

“You cannot ignore the effect of the LSS (last song syndrome). Anything that brings to mind the elections is something that you want to encourage especially if your goal is to increase participation,” he said. #MatalinongBoto2019
