A total of 250 students from 98 schools were recently employed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) under its Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES).
MMDA said the interns will each receive P16,110 upon completing the required 30 days of work, 60 percent of which will be paid by the MMDA while 40 percent will be shouldered by Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
They will work as administration clerks, computer operators, research assistants, records aides, messengers, engineering aides, data encoders, statistician aides, etc.
Romando Artes, MMDA Assistant General Manager for Finance and Administration, said students should not focus on the earnings but the experience they will gain at the government agency.
“Do not waste much of your time on leisure that does not contribute to self-improvement. Take this opportunity to be productive while you are young and discover where you can excel,” MMDA Deputy Chairman Frisco San Juan Jr. advised the students during their orientation.
Meantime, Andrea Cabansag, Director II of DOLE Pasay/Makati Field Office, thanked the MMDA for continuing the yearly summer program that encourages students to make their summer vacation rewarding, valuable, and worthwhile.
MMDA said that students, while doing actual work, can learn about the mandates of the agency – traffic management, solid waste management, urban planning, health, public safety, environmental protection and flood control management, and public safety. (JEL SANTOS)###
