Customs whistleblower denies quote circulating in social media

Lourdes Mangaoang, the “whistleblower” of the Bureau of Customs, denied on Tuesday that she said the country’s worst administration is under President Rodrigo Duterte.

A netizen named Nepthalie R. Gonzales posted a photo of her on Facebook accompanied by her supposed quote, “In my 30 years of service to the Bureau of Customs, pinakamalala sa kurapsyon ang administrasyong ito.”

The post has been circulating since April 13, with 1,903 shares and 359 reactions as of this writing.

But Mangaoang, a lawyer, contradicted Gonzales’ post and described it as “fake news.”

“First of all, I did not make that statement in any occasion. Secondly, I do not know Nepthalie R. Gonzales and I do not recall having met her or talked to her. So quoting me has no basis at all,” she said.

“I am being misquoted by Gonzales and the FB post is not only out of context but also they are not my words,” she added.

Mangaoang is the former X-ray division chief of BOC, who testified before both chambers of Congress on the investigation into the P11-billion shabu shipment that slipped past the bureau last year.

At the House and Senate probe, she said the magnetic lifters found in Cavite by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency were not empty of illegal drugs based on her X-ray image analysis.

Mangaoang had also appeared before media about the lapses in BOC’s release of the magnetic filters, but according to her, she never said the Duterte administration is the worst.

She then asked various groups who are critical of the current administration to stop using her and the alleged statement she never made, “for the purpose of discrediting the Duterte administration or driving a wedge between me and the Duterte supporters.”

“I ask those who posted the fake statement in FB to take it down or I will be compelled to file charges against them for violation of the Cybercrime Law,” said Mangaoang.

“I fought for justice and the truth and I will continue to do so for our beloved Philippines and the present and future generations of Filipinos,” she continued. (Raymund F. Antonio)
