Fierce gun battle erupts in Comval province’s far-flung town

CAMP BANCASI, Butuan City – An undetermined number of Communist New People’s Army Terrorists (CNTs) were believed killed or wounded when a 20-minute fierce gun battle erupted between government forces and communist insurgents in Southern Mindanao.

, First Lieutenant Jhocell D. Asis, Civil Military Operations (CMO) officer of the 71stInfantry (Kaibigan) Battallion (71st IB) said their operating unit also seized several war materials,lower receiver M16 Rifle, 1 long magazine of M16 Rifle, bomb materials including Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), 1 blasting cap, 1 homemade shotgun with 1 magazine loaded with live bullets, 150 meters tripwires, 1 transistor radio, and subversive documents with high intelligence value.

“Our operating troops also seized from the encounter site several food stuffs, batteries, three water containers, three back packs with personal belongings and hammocks,” the 71st IB CMO officer said.

The clash took place at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, March 31, in Sitio Dasuran, Barangay Golden Valley, Mabini, Compostela Valley (Comval) province, where the March 28, 2019 encounter also happened, she said.

No one was injured on the government side while several CNTs were believed killed or wounded.

Lt. Col. Esteveyn E. Ducusin, commanding officer of the 71st IB commended the troops for the relentless pursuit operations against the CNTs.

“We believe that they are still the same terrorist group that our troops encountered three days ago,” the 71st IB commander said.

“We are always in pursuit of those who refuse to heed the call for peace. We are in focused military operations to keep the pressure on the terrorist group for them to surrender or else be destroyed,” said Lt. Col. Ducusin.

“We continue to hunt down the terrorist group to protect the community from their deceptive recruitment, extortion activities, and atrocities,” Lt. Col. Ducusin added.
