The new license plates to be installed in front of vehicles will not be made out of metal, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) clarified Tuesday.

“Hindi po tama yung sinasabi nila na ang gagawing materyal doon sa plaka sa harap ay metal,” LTO Asec. Edgar Galvante said in a press briefing Tuesday.

Galvante said that no provision in the Republic Act 11235, the Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act of 2017, requires the new license plates to be made out of metal.

However, Galvante said that the plates should be “sturdy” and visible enough within the distance of 15 meters, as provided by the law.

President Duterte signed last March 8 the act that mandates motorcycle riders to have bigger and color-coded plates both in front and in the back.

On Sunday, thousands of motorcycle riders staged a “Unity Ride” condemning the new law, citing safety hazards due to the installation of plates in front of their motorcycles.

Galvante, on the other hand, presented to the media design samples of the proposed new plates, with a size of 198mm x 220mm, and a font size of 70mm by 34mm.

“Again, I just want to clarify that this is not final. We are making sure that (the design) follows what was mandated in the provisions of the law,” Galvante said.

He said that LTO is also considering that the new plates will be made of “conduction sticker material.”

“Itong conduction sticker material, isang kino-consider din yan dahil ito naman nagla-last at hindi ito may panganib na matanggal, lilipad at tatama sa driver,” Galvante said.

Meanwhile, Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade said the department is open to suggestions for the design of the new motorcycle plates.
