The Eastern Police District (EPD) has warned the public about extortion and safety threats being spread through text messages and on social media by alleged members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).

“If you received such information through your mobile phones, please do not hesitate to report to the nearest police station for verification and possible operation,” said Chief Supt. Christopher Tambungan, EPD acting director.

The eastern metro—composed of the cities of Pasig, Mandaluyong, Marikina, and San Juan—had been “peaceful for the past years” due to the effective cooperation of the police, private sectors, and the local government units, Tambungan bared.

With this, Tambungan stressed that the EPD “will not tolerate the spreading of fear and extortion schemes” by implementing continuous counter intelligence measures.

EPD will also boost its police presence and border patrolling to places of convergence to prevent the threats.

“Help us stop this scheme of spreading fear to the public. Do not share or pass the text message to anyone, just report it immediately so as not to create panic or harm,” Tambungan said.
