In his motion for leave to travel, Ricketts said that the trip will be for a vacation with his wife and children. He explained that his family wanted to take advantage of the children’s free time, and have been planning the trip since December 2018.

Their itinerary will be for “city tours, shopping, visit museums and tourist spots and enjoy famous eating places and night markets,” the motion revealed. They will be staying at the Shinjuku Granbell Hotel.

Ricketts initially wrote in the travel motion that his travel dates will be from March 1 to 8, and it was granted in open court on February 8. However, he later clarified in an urgent motion to correct the travel dates to March 1 to 9.

Ricketts was earlier charged with graft due to the reportedly anomalous handling of confiscated DVDs and VCDs back in 2010.

Ricketts, together with other OMB officials – Enforcement and Inspection Division (EID) head Manuel Mangubat, EID investigation agent Joseph Arnaldo, and EID computer operator Glenn Perez – confiscated several boxes of DVDs and VCDs from Sky High Marketing building in Quezon City sometime on May 2010.

However, the confiscated items were said to have been released to the raided establishment that same day, and no charges were filed against the company.
