Duterte appeals: Don’t put useless people in Senate

By Argyll Geducos

President Duterte renewed his appeal to the public to choose the candidates who can make a change for the country and not those who are just talking but are really useless.

Duterte made the statement as he made a pitch for his 12 senatorial bets during the PDP-Laban campaign rally in Biñan, Laguna Saturday evening.

In his speech, Duterte said that his critics who are running for public office are talking against him just to keep themselves in the minds of the electorate.

“Ano naman nagawa nila? Hanggang salita. What makes you remember them? Extraordinarily na masabi mo na kailangan mong ibalik sila (What did they do? They are just all talk. What did they do extraordinarily that makes you remember them and makes you say that you have to put them back at the Senate)?” he said.

“Iwasan ninyo ‘yan, ‘yung walang ginawa kung hindi mag… Sabihin mo sa mga tao (Avoid those who have done nothing. Tell that to everybody),” he added.

Of his 12 candidates, five are eyeing a return to the Senate. These are senators Koko Pimentel, Cynthia Villar, Sonny Angara, and JV Ejercito; and Congresswoman Pia Cayetano.

“Ito ‘yung sabi ko na ibalik ninyo. Talagang wala kayo — ‘yang hindi tayo malugi. Hindi ka man ma-short diyan ‘yang mga bolador na puro arte lang (These are the ones who you should put back at the Senate. You will not lose with them. They are not like those who are all talk),” Duterte said.

“Alam mo matao ‘yang Pilipino kasi masa-masa tapos mag-idol-idol. Mag-idol kayo ‘yung totoo. Huwag kayong mag-idol na… Iyong talagang makita mo na may ginawa para sa ating bayan. Iyon ang i-idol ninyo. Iyon ang iboto ninyo (Filipinos are pro-people. It’s OK to have idols but idolize those who did something for our country. Vote for those people),” he added.

Duterte then hoped that the people would vote for his candidates, adding that voting for useless people in the Senate is a mortal sin for them.

“Alam mo sa totoo lang, mortal sin ‘yan sa inyo. Nandito, dinala ko na nga sa harapan ninyo ang mga tao. Totoo lang. Hindi ko ito iharap kung sabihin mo na may… (Let’s be real, it’s a mortal sin for you. Here, I brought people in front of you. I will not campaign for them if there is something wrong with them),” he said.

“Bakit ninyo ibigay ‘yang responsibility na mabigat para sa kapakanan ng bayan sa mga taong alam ninyo na inutil. Iyan ang ibig kong sabihin (Why would you give the big responsibility of shaping our country to those people who are useless? That’s what I mean),” he added.

Duterte has just completed his senatorial lineup for the 2019 midterm polls with the addition of former Interior Secretary Raffy Alunan.

Duterte is officially campaigning for Alunan, Pimentel, Villar, Angara, Ejercito, Cayetano, Maguindanao Representative Zajid Mangudadatu, former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, former Special Assistant to the President Christopher Go, former Political Adviser Francis Tolentino, Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos, and singer Freddie Aguilar.
