President Duterte can consider two “very capable” housing officials to head the new Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD).
In a radio interview Saturday, Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito said Duterte can choose between the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) Chairman Eduardo del Rosario or the National Housing Authority (NHA) General Manager Marcelino Escalada Jr. to appoint as secretary of the newly-created DHSUD.
Ejercito, principal author of Republic Act 11201 which creates the DHSUD, cited his “good” working experience with the two before the passage of the law. The reelectionist senator chairs the Senate Committee on Urban Planning, Housing and Resettlement.
In vouching for the HUDCC chair, Ejercito described Del Rosario as “very kind.” Meanwhile, he called Escalada, a “planner.”
Ejercito said the two are also good “listeners” and are both “reforms-oriented.”
“Either of the two is very capable to be secretary of the department,” he said.
The senator, on the other hand, maintained that the decision on who will lead the DHSUD is still up to Duterte.
On Friday, President Duterte said he is yet to decide who to appoint as DHSUD Secretary.
He said he will talk to Senate President Vicente Sotto III and House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo so that the new member of the Cabinet will get a “better reception” from Congress.
The DHSUD integrates all housing agencies and shall be responsible for managing the government’s housing and urban development programs.
