4 tectonic quakes shake Siargao Island anew

BUTUAN CITY – Four tectonic earthquakes jolted Siargao Island anew on Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

However, the provincial and municipal disaster risk reduction and management councils (DRRMCs) there reported no damage or injury.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said a 5.5-magnitude earthquake was registered at 6:21 a.m. today.

The epicenter was traced 42 kilometers (km) northeast of General Luna town, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte province.

The new tremor had a depth of 44 km, it said.

Intensity 1 was also registered in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental and Cebu City while the earthquake was also felt at the region’s premier and capital city of Butuan and Surigao City.

Earlier, at 6:13 a.m. on the same day (Feb. 10), a 3.6-magnitude earthquake was also registered and its epicenter was plotted 38 km northeast of that same country’s surfing capital of General Luna town, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte province, with a shallow depth of only 8 km, Phivolcs said.

The state agency also reported that a 3.8-magnitude tremor was also recorded at 3:46 a.m. on the same day. The epicenter was located 39 km northeast of that same town and island, with a shallow depth of only 8 km, it said.

Another 3.9-magnitude earthquake was also registered at 2:44 a.m. on the same day and its epicenter was traced 35 km northeast also of General Luna town, Siargao Island, with a depth of only 10 km, Phivolcs said.

On early Friday evening, a strong 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck in that same town and island, it was then followed by a series of mild aftershocks.

However, in a phone interview with local officials they said these series of tremors did not inflict any damage or injury.

But just the same, Surigao del Norte Gov. Sol F. Matugas and the province’s 1st District Rep. Francisco Jose “Bingo” F. Matugas ll alerted all rescue teams of the provincial and municipal DRRMCs there, ready to respond to provide any immediate assistance to residents.

As of press time, a series of mild earthquakes continues in General Luna town, Siargao Island, majority of the tremors were of a magnitude 3.3 or weaker, Phivolcvs added, in its bulletin.
