CEBU CITY—At least 145 houses were destroyed after two fires broke out hours apart in the cities of Cebu and Talisay on Sunday.
The first fire happened in Barangay Poblacion Pardo, Cebu City where 85 houses were destroyed while 11 others were damaged.
Fire damage was pegged at P1.2 million, said Cebu City Fire Department Fire Marshal Noel Nelson Ababon.
Three residents were injured after they rushed to their burning homes to save some belongings.
The fire broke out at around 8:59 a.m. The fire was put out at 1:44 p.m.
According to Ababon, the cause of the fire is still being investigated although there were reports that it started in the house of one Mario Tabura where a butane canister exploded while being used for cooking.
Ababon said the narrow streets leading to the fire site prevented them from putting out the fire quickly.
Shortly before 2 p.m., a fire also broke out in a thickly populated area of Barangay Tangke, Talisay City where 60 houses went up in smoke.
Firefighters from neighboring areas rushed to the fire site after the alarm was raised to Task Force Bravo.
The fire was contained at 3:16 p.m. before it was finally put out at 4:10 p.m.
The fire reportedly started in an abandoned house where children were seen playing matchsticks before the incident.
The fire damaged properties worth at least P350,000, said FO3 Roberto Nahine of the Talisay City Fire Department.
