2 hold-up suspects killed in shootout after ignoring police checkpoint

Two hold-up suspects were killed after ignoring a police checkpoint and engaging in a shootout with policemen in Quezon City Wednesday before dawn.

Investigators of Quezon City Police Station 6 said the slain suspects have yet to be identified but described them to be in their early 40s and late 40s, both clad in black jackets and black shirt, one was wearing a black cap and pants, while the other one was wearing a brown bonnet and brown short pants.

Initial investigation showed that personnel of Batasan Police Station (PS-6) were conducting a COMELEC checkpoint on the corner of Payatas Road and Molave Street in Brgy. Payatas.

At around 2:15 a.m., two men riding on motorcycle appeared and deliberately ignored the checkpoint.

Authorities tried to flag down the suspects but instead of stopping, the men sped off prompting police officers to chase them.

However, when they were cornered at Katipunan Extension inside AMLAC Subdivision, the back rider suddenly shot it out at the pursuing officers resulting in a shootout.

The policemen who retaliated were able to hit the duo on different parts of their bodies causing them to die on the spot.

Meanwhile, the victim identified as Maribel Fernandez, 28, a call center agent, arrived with some police officers at the crime scene and positively identified the suspects as those who robbed her earlier that day.

According to Fernandez, she was on her way to work and was walking along Ilang-ilang Street corner IBP Road in Brgy. Payatas around 1:40 a.m. when the suspects onboard a black and orange motorcycle without plate number forcibly took his shoulder bag at gunpoint.

Police were able to recover from the suspects the stolen bag containing some cash, identification cards, and mobile phone.

16 collared, 12 minors rescued in Navotas drug dens

Twenty-eight drug suspects, including 12 minors, were nabbed in a buy-bust operation inside three alleged drug dens at the Navotas Fish Port in Navotas City on Wednesday morning.

Among the 16 alleged drug personalities collared was a certain ‘Negro,’ who is said to be the supplier of illegal drugs at the Navotas Fish Port.

Meanwhile, 12 minors, aged 4 to 15 years old, were also rescued by elements of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

PDEA Director General Aaron Aquino said the rescued minors were used as drug pushers.

The minors were also found to be using illegal drugs, Aquino said.

Investigation showed that a poseur buyer was led by minors to three drug dens at the Navotas Fish Port.

After finalizing a drug deal with the suspects, the poseur buyer signalled to back-up operatives, leading to the suspects’ arrest.

According to Aquino, the fish port was subjected to police surveillance for about a month before they conducted the sting.

Forty-four sachets of suspected shabu were retrieved from the alleged drug dens.

The suspects were brought to the PDEA headquarters and will be facing appropriate charges.

Meanwhile, the rescued minors were brought to the Department of Social Welfare and Development for proper disposition and intervention.

Aquino said the alleged drug dens will be dismantled so residents of the area will not be able to use it. (Minka Klaudia Tiangco)
