The National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) has urged the public to be “observant” as the election period for the midterm polls in May starts on Sunday, January 13.
“This coming elections, be a citizen election observer. If you observe any election violation in your community, take photo, document it, or gather proof, and report it to Comelec (Commission on Elections) or Namfrel,” the poll watchdog group said.
Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said that the public should expect more checkpoints with the implementation of the gun ban nationwide.
“The election period for the #NLE2019 starts tonight at midnight. And so does the #GunBan. Expect Comelec checkpoints to go up starting midnight tonight,” said Jimenez.
The Comelec official, meanwhile, reiterated the prohibited acts during the election period. These include: alteration of, or creation of new precincts; transfer/ movement of employees in the civil service; unauthorized use of security personnel/ bodyguards by candidates; use of private armies; and suspension of elective officials.
The election period will be until June 12, 2019.
The Comelec also reminded the candidates that the campaign period for senators and party-list groups will start on February 12 until May 11.
The campaign period for the local candidates, meanwhile, will start on March 29 until May 11.
