With the resurgence of the University of the Philippines’ (UP’s) men’s basketball team in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), senators are now pushing for an increase in the State University’s sports development fund.
During the Upper Chamber’s deliberations Thursday afternoon on the proposed 2019 budgets of state universities and colleges (SUCs) under the General Appropriations Bill (GAB), Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri expressed the senators’ intention to raise UP’s fund for its sports programs by at least P20 million.
He said senators – both graduates and non-graduates of UP – have united to support the school’s varsity teams.
In making his manifestation, Zubiri recognized the UP Fighting Maroon’s achievement in the just-concluded UAAP Season 81 basketball finals, despite losing to the Ateneo de Manila University’s Blue Eagles.
Zubiri, an alumnus of the UP, cited the Fighting Maroons for ending the state university’s 32-year drought of making it to the UAAP basketball finals.
He also lauded officials of the UP for their efforts.
Zubiri said he will propose the increase when the Senate moves to the period of amendments on the GAB.
Under the 2019 GAB passed by the House of Representatives, which the Senate is now scrutinizing, SUCs were allocated a total budget of P65.2 billion.
